Pre-Surgery Information
This information may answer many of your questions and concerns regarding the surgical procedure. Please feel free to call us on 9314 7444 during business hours if you have any further questions.
On the Morning of the Surgery
Your pet will be having a general anaesthetic. Just like with humans it is important that no food is eaten on the morning of the surgery. Please remove any food before going to bed the night before. Water is fine through the night and in the morning.
In the Clinic
Your pet will have pre surgical admission in the morning normally between 8am - 9am. Most surgeries are carried out in the early afternoon. This is a time we have specifically reserved for surgeries. We usually prefer to admit all patients first thing in the morning so we can observe and prepare your pet for surgery. It is important that you are contactable during the day in case we need to speak to you regarding the surgery whilst your pet is still under anaesthetic. Please leave a contact number when you drop off your pet in the morning.
What are Premed Drugs?
Pre-medication drugs are used to relax our patients in their warm comfy bed prior to their procedure. Pain relief is also given prior to and after the operation / procedure to ensure there is no discomfort after surgery.
The Surgery
Surgical patients are transferred by a qualified nurse to our dedicated surgical facility. Here, veterinarians and nurses from South Street Vet operate using the latest equipment and anaesthetic agents to ensure the safest possible outcome. The separate surgical facility allows us to achieve the highest standards whilst keeping costs down to a minimum for you.
Surgical Fluids
Recent research shows that giving intravenous fluids during anaesthesia reduces the risks involved, and therefore is now recommended for all patients.
When to Call
Most surgeries are completed and pets returned to South Street Vet by late afternoon. We usually ask you to call us between 3.00 - 3.30 pm to arrange a going home time.
Going Home Time
Most of our patients go home the same day of their procedure. Home times are normally between 5 - 6 pm during the week. We are here until 6.30pm during the week.
Home Care & Medications
When you pick your pet up one of our nurses or vets will go through a customised home care & information package with you. This will inform you about all the after care required at home. Additional medications such as pain relief and antibiotics may be given to continue treatments at home.
Follow up Visits
Depending on the surgery / procedure there may be different time periods for your pet to come back for a check up. These checkups & dates will be itemized in your pet's going home package. There is no charge for drain removals or suture removals (charges will only apply for extended medication or treatments).
